
Dr Tom Goodsall

Dr Tom Goodsall is a Gastroenterologist and General Physician with special interest and expertise in inflammatory bowel disease including paediatric transitional care. His other areas of interest include bowel cancer prevention, motility disorders and IBS, upper GI disorders and general gastroenterology and hepatology. Tom’s focus is on enhancement of patient experience through collaborative care and shared decision making.
After receiving dual Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2019, Tom was awarded the GENIUS research fellow grant and worked as an IBD clinical research fellow at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide where he gained expertise in intestinal ultrasound for inflammatory bowel disease. He has commenced PhD candidature on validating the use of intestinal ultrasound in Crohn’s disease and has published multiple studies in the field. Whilst in Adelaide, Tom was fortunate to be involved in dietary and faecal microbiota transplant (FMT) research and gained experience in FMT in the treatment of Clostridium difficile.
Tom is a Staff Specialist Gastroenterologist and General Physician at John Hunter Hospital where he has established the intestinal ultrasound service, leads the paediatric inflammatory bowel disease transition clinic, and has developed an FMT program. He remains actively involved in research and has published multiple papers in international peer reviewed journals. He is also active in multinational and local clinical trials. Tom is passionate about medical education and holds clinical lecturer positions at the University of Newcastle and University of Adelaide.
Tom aims to deliver a high standard of patient focused care in a respectful, professional, collaborative and approachable manner. Tom lives in Newcastle with his GP wife and two daughters and enjoys being the household chef, family adventures in the Hunter and surfing at Bar Beach and Catho.
